Can't you count?

"Albert Einstein: probably the most famous amateur violinist. When he repeatedly made a mistake while playing with the pianist Artur Schnabel, the Austrian asked, "What's the matter with you, Einstein? Can't you count?"

Ben & Jerry's Free Cone Day!

Yes, April 17th. Ice cream. Free.

Visit your teachers!

I was in the mood for some green tea ice cream, red bean ice cream, congee and dim sum, so I decided to head on over to T&T to do a bit of early afternoon grocery shopping. There I saw my 2nd violin teacher, Mr. Hou, who taught me for a few years back when I was in grade school (I think when I was about 6 to 9 years old). However my screeching and flailing arms failed to capture his attention (except for those around me), so I gave up and scurried on over to the next aisle to escape the many strange stares I was getting. After a few minutes, I regretted not trying hard enough (although I think yelling and doing jumping jacks is trying-hard-enough), so I tried to find him--to no avail. :( It's been over seven years since I last saw him (ran into him randomly at the conservatory while waiting for a lesson), and although he looks much older now, it was undoubtedly him. (Plus he had a violin case on his back.) Current mood: Nostalgic. My bow arm is what it is today because of him. My best memories of him are:

1. My first lesson, where he caught me glancing at my watch (an hour is too long for the attention span of a 6 year old) and joked about it. I remember feeling really ashamed.
2. He gave out candies on Hallowe'en!
3. I gained my infamous scar on the forehead at the conservatory right after his lesson on the third floor. (If you don't know about it, it's because an elevator door ran into me.)

I think I might go visit my teachers back from high school again before I start working. You should, too! :)

As an aside, his daughter is doing really well:

"If a great musician plays great music but no one hears... was he really any good?"

One of the world's top violinists performs incognito to an audience at the l'Enfant Plaza Station during rush hour. What happens?
